HELLO, I'm Joseph T.Riach, Tom to my friends -

I am an award-winning Sales Person, Marketing Developer and Creative Solutions in business specialist. I latterly owned an accountancy firm and I can prepare, read and analyse financial data, important to my role of business advisor/analyst. I also owned several businesses. In recent times I have simply offered my skills to those who might benefit from the experience of my knowledge and success of my thirty plus years in business.

Strongly independent by nature I worked for myself my entire working life from age 23, but always employing the team ethic. My strength is my easy adaptability to different situations, industry sectors and corporate structures. For example I worked equally comfortably in Financial Services as in Contract Maintenance and in Privately-owned or in major 'Blue-Chip' companies.

My proven skills are in Sales at the highest level, Market Development, Project Implementation, Operational Problem Solving (Creative Solutions) and General Management; these augmented by good computer literacy, language skills and strategic and financial analytical ability. Oh!, and I'm not without my wee bit of Scottish cannyness with money, "Granny's piggy-bank syndrome" as I call it!

Resumee : 1951 Up To The Present

Thirteen years at Grammar School (seven primary and six upper) were followed by five years of various work experience until I set up my own business in Scotland in 1969 at age twenty-three. In 1996 I relocated to South West France in order to write, which I continue to do. However I was easily lured back into business advisory work there and I also set up a personal and business mentoring service. In January 2002 I moved to the Algarve region in Southern Portugal. I continue available to consider good quality business advisory, sales and marketing and/or interim management work world-wide.

WORK HISTORY

2002 to Now.

Moved to the Algarve where I have been employed in consultancy work, sales and marketing projects for a number of major companies. I continue to write and I also run Algarve Golf Holidays, my Wake Up Personal Mentoring and Business Guidance Service and Property In Portugal :
2007. Devised and set up marketing project for A Car 4 U Car Rental, Portugal.
2006. Devised and set up My Discount Card a new concept marketing company.
2002/ongoing. Own and run Algarve Golf Holidays specialising in golfing holidays for the British and Irish markets.
2005/2006. Freelance Sales & Marketing work for Buying Property In Portugal.
2005. Devised and conducted marketing presentations for the Pestana Hotel Group.
2005. Consultant Marketing Manager, Portugal for Club Sunterra Europe lda.
2003/ongoing. Operate Property In Portugal a property purchase advisory service for British and Irish buyers of property in the Algarve.
2002/2004. Wrote and conducted marketing presentations and staff training for the Grand Vacation Club and Sunterra Holiday Club. This project also involved work with Air Tours, First Choice, Thomas Cook, Cosmos, My Travel, Libra and Sky holiday companies. (More Information).
2004. Organised and conducted a business presentation in Faro for holiday industry heads on the topic of package holiday companies involvement with timeshare holiday clubs. See Business Presentation.
2003/ongoing. In 2003 I created, test-marketed and proved an entirely new day-trip for holidaymakers to a previously unexploited location in the Algarve. This and other unique trips I have researched and developed operate as Mercedes Tours. (Interested Tour Operators and others see New Day Trip).
2003. Devised a 'soft' marketing and follow-through sales programme for application in the Holiday Club market. (Interested parties see Soft Is Best!).

1996 to 2002.

I relocated to France (bliss!) and did the following:
1998/ongoing. Devised and implemented the Wake Up Personal Mentoring and Business Guidance venture in which I pass on to visiting guests my ideas and beliefs with regard to success and achievement. (More).
1998/99. Wrote "More Money Less Effort"©, a book on the subject of personal development and wealth creation. (Available Here).

1997/02. Part-Time General Management Advisor to an international Interior Design Consultancy based in S.W.France. ( See Personal Reference).

1978 to 1996 (Trading as The NBL Consultancy, Abel and Guy, Boyle Accountancy Scotland.)

My business life started as a small book-keeping service for a few friends. But I was fortunate to find, and successfully complete, major industry trouble-shooting work and in little time my company grew to become first, a Business Consultancy (The NBL Consultancy, Aberdeen & Norwich) specialising in Sales and Marketing Projects and later also an Accountancy Practice (Abel & Guy and then Boyle Accountancy Scotland) employing Chartered and Certified Accountants, various specialist consultants (eg computer, personnel, tax) as required by project and with a total payroll of eighteen.

My personal roles centred on Sales - selling the services of my companies and of our clients - but also included (a) General Management, Development and Promotion of the company and (b) Personal Confidante and Advisor to clients. Often this work entailed working on-site with clients on an interim basis and I carried out many such assignments for both large national and smaller local concerns. (eg. Pritchard Service Group, London and P.W.Adamson, Aberdeen).

In addition I set up and ran a number of other operations for myself, notably a Financial Service Sales business (National Business Loans, Aberdeen) and a Pre-School Nursery company (Cloud 9 Pre-School Nurseries, Aberdeen).

During my twenty-seven years in business in the UK I established, owned, directed and managed a diverse range of businesses and my company was involved in most business disciplines viz. Sales, Marketing, General Management, Personnel, Export/Import, Research, Tax, Systems, Technology, Strategies and Finance (personal and corporate).

I personally successfully acted as Sales and Development Director, Marketing Manager, Financial Director and General Manager in businesses as diverse as offshore refridgeration (P.W.Adamson, Aberdeen), personnel recruitment (Secretarial Staff Services, Aberdeen) and contract maintenance (Pritchard Service Group, London).
My work has taken me to Kuwait (Hampson Engineering, Birmingham), Brazil, Jamaica and Morocco (Hill Samuel Investment Services, London), Norway (Glensol Cosmetics, Haugesund), France (Marlene Black Interior Design Consultancy), Portugal (Barringtons Clube Desportivo) and Greece (Nick Kalyvis Trading, Athens), where I helped to establish two businesses during 1990. I 'retired' to France in 1996 and I now reside in Portugal.

Between 1986 and 1990 I devoted substantial time to a Financial Services Sales operation (National Business Loans, Aberdeen as agents to Hill Samuel Investment Services, London). For five consecutive years I was one of the Top Salespeople in the entire UK industry and I won 'Top Achiever and International Conference Delegate' recognition. I was invited to address several industry seminars on Sales, Marketing and Technical aspects of financial services. The innovative sales/marketing plan I created has become an industry standard model, 'Creative Solutions' of this kind being a central and recurring theme in my business successes.
In 1992 I set up an East of Scotland Agency for London and Manchester Assurance, Exeter employing and training a sales team of twent-two, an operation I later sold to Dutch company Aegon.

In 1989 I established my pre-school nursery company (Cloud 9 Pre-School Nurseries, Aberdeen) which by 1994 employed thirty staff at four nursery schools. I devised and wrote a business plan for the development of a national chain which Investors In Industry (3i) were keen to have me implement.

There follows a resumee of some other successful projects (as with all my work, these services were first devised and sold by me and then operated by me/my companies) :
A contract with major national food manufacturer (Grampian Country Chickens, Banff), consulting regarding staffing and running a new multi-million pound factory complex and regarding their internal management structure.

Appointment as the inhouse contractor to provide a range of personnel advisory and financial services to one of the country's largest Local Authority Health Trusts (Tayside Regional Health Trust, Dundee).

Retrieved back into the personal ownership of my clients their former firm which had been taken over by a hostile venture capital company. (Name with-held for legal reasons).

Redundancy counselling contract to give advice, help and support to six hundred employees of a major Local Authority Health Trust (Tayside Regional Health Trust, Dundee).

Assimilated and prepared over a two year period the entire legal proof in a substantial civil action lawsuit brought by (and won by) my client. (P.W.Adamson, Aberdeen).

Consultant Contract Co-ordinator for the Ministry of Defense at Rosyth Royal Naval Dockyard at the time of privatisation and contracting out of on-site services.

Consultant Co-ordinator of Contractors for Debenhams plc in the run up to the opening of their Princes Street, Edinburgh store in 1981.

Rescuing two major maintenance contracts (three airports and a chain of supermarkets) for a national service company (Pritchard Service Group, London) by devising and implementing entirely new concepts for the projects. (I did interim/project management for three major companies in this field, also I.C.C., Manchester and Beaver, Glasgow and later set up my own company, Premier Services).
Additionally :
Import and Sale of Cosmetics (Kare Solem, Norway).
Design and Export of Whisky. (Nick Kalyvis Trading, Athens)
Property Company. (Self)
Telephone Equipment Sales. (Callstyle, Scotland)
- and I possess a certificate in rabbit husbandry, gained in order to be competent in dealing with a rabbit farm venture!

1969 to 1978 (Trading as Littlefield Driving School)

Self-explanatory. Over 7yrs developed to three cars, two employees and a taxi service. Learned first hand about running a business and from this developed my professional involvement in the strategies and practices of commercial enterprises large and small.


1964 to 1969 (The w-i-i-i-ld years)!

General work experience in a variety of full/part-time jobs such as Environmental Health Inspector, Professional Footballer, Paper Mill Management, Bar Work, Driving and Labouring. All gave me a second 'street-level hands-on' education and invaluable insight into human behaviour and business and commercial practices. These helped to shape my ideas and attitudes and provided many valuable future contacts.


EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

1991 to 1993.
The Chartered Insurance Institute. Gained M.L.I.A.(dip) by exam pass (twice) in the Financial Planning Certificate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (subjects Marketing, Sales, Life Assurance, Pensions).
1986 to 1988.
The Hill Samuel Residential College. Gained Senior Executive status by exam passes in Advanced Offshore Investment and Taxation, Advanced Corporate Planning (twice), Advanced Estate Planning and Advanced Investment.
1951 to 1964.
Aberdeen Grammar School. Gained S.C.E. Higher Grade passes in English and Geography; Ordinary Grade passes in Mathematics, Physics and French - and I received (in spite of my general inattentiveness, bad behaviour and preoccupation with all things sporting) a wonderfully rounded education, from which I continue to benefit to this day!
